Work-Based Learning

Central Technical Training Academy hosts a monthly guest speaker series featuring representatives from trades organizations and businesses. These guest speaker events allow students to learn about a particular trade or business, ask questions, and network. These talks take place during students' common elective period, Period 5. All student are encourage to sign up to attend and participate. Sign up information will be shared through school announcements and CTE classes.

Central Technical Training Academy students benefit from a wide range of industry tours including visits to facilities, training centers, and industry trade shows. Industry tours not only provide a behind-the-scenes look at a particular field, they also allow students to demonstrate their workplace readiness skills in a real world setting and to grow their networks. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities. Information about industry tours, including due dates for field trip packets, is provided through announcements and CTE courses.

Students who complete 60 hours of work-based learning through an internship or workplace experience directly related to the student's CTE program of study and who submit the required paperwork can earn high school credit. 

CCSD Maintenance Student Worker Program
Central Technical Training Academy has partnered with CCSD's Facilities Department to offer a work experience opportunity to students. The part-time position with the district allows students to work alongside CCSD technicians in one or more of the following areas: Building Engineer, Electrician, Plumber, HVAC Technician, Fire Alarm Technician, Utility Worker, and Welder. Students work around 15 hours per week on Distance Learning days.  

During the 2025-2026 school year, CCSD employed 20 Student Workers. During the spring semester, students completed an average of 250 hours, acquired technical skills, grew durable skills, and built their resumes. We anticipate having 15 Student Worker positions in the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. Interviews will be held in September, with the goal of students starting in October.

Are you currently working? We know that part-time work does more than provide a pay check. For high school students, these work experiences build durable skills like communication, teamwork, reliability, and time management; they also build students' resumes. These experiences are valuable and we want to be sure that this is reflected in students' transcripts. Students who work at least 180 hours over the course of a semester can earn credit for Exploratory Work Experience. This course is repeatable and earns a letter grade. Students are required to submit proof of the paid work experience, such as a pay stub. 

Students who are working in paid positions are encouraged to contact our Work-Based Learning Coordinator, John Grygo, grygojd@nv.ccsd.net, or our School Counselor, Genia Wolfe, wolfemg@nv.ccsd.net, for more information. Verification of hours is due no later than a week prior to the end of the semester. 

Central Technical Training is intentional about providing students opportunities to grow and practice their workplace readiness skills. These opportunities are built into students' common elective periods and address workplace readiness topics including career exploration and planning, resume writing, interviewing skills, professional communication and networking.

Local Partner Seeks Part Time Distribution Team Member
Central Tech is collaborating with a growing distribution company located in North Las Vegas, near the Speedway, to fill a part time position. Hours for the position are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., two to three days a week. Please reach out to Ms. Bonderov, bondelm@nv.ccsd.net, for more information.
